Agentic AI for clinical operations: orchestration without chaos
For a multi-site healthcare client, we designed an agentic layer that plans and executes multi-step tasks—calling approved tools, retrieving policy-aware context, and handing off to humans when confidence or policy requires it.
Why agentic (and not just a chatbot)
Clinical operations involve sequences: eligibility checks, routing, documentation hooks, and follow-ups. A single-turn LLM prompt cannot own that reliably. Agentic patterns let the system decompose work, use structured tools (tickets, forms, internal APIs), and respect stop conditions—under audit logging.
What we shipped
- A constrained toolset per role, with explicit allowlists and rate limits
- Retrieval grounded in internal playbooks—not the open web
- Human-in-the-loop checkpoints for high-impact actions
- Trace IDs across steps so support and compliance can reconstruct intent
Lessons learned
Agentic systems fail loudly without evaluation harnesses. We invested in offline scenarios and regression suites for tool-calling, plus dashboards for drift when policies or codes change.
